Podcasting

I mean, damn, what will they think of next? Check this from the CSM:

The idea behind a podcast is simple, yet brilliant. Instead of using portable MP3 players such as the iPod only for listening to music, new software called iPodder allows one to download prerecorded radio shows onto the devices.

Though several radio stations have begun podcasting shows, the medium’s most visible impact has been empowering DJs like Klass to broadcast their own homemade radio shows with just a microphone, a computer, and a dash of brio.

I don’t know that I see this as a big part of my personal future – I barely have enough time and smarts to run this little personal bandwidth sink – but I’m guessing it holds all kinds of potential for a lot of folks.

And hey – I’m always up for any new alternative to Clear Channel. Now if I could just afford an iPod….

  • i had an idea along this vein, but this is MUCH cooler. yeah, now i want an iPod … but i’ll probably just wait ’til the Sony PSPs come out in march. PS2 quality games on a portable, plus you can watch movies and store mp3s on it. tasty.

  • memory?
Do we know what kind of memory capacity the SONY will have? And the cost?

sorry for the delay. the PSPs have a slot for their handy little memory sticks … so the memory is up to you. i believe they currently have 1GB memory sticks. one company has already signed on in Japan to distribute mpeg4 compressed movies for the device. handheld gaming is a really interesting facet of the game industry. the nice thing about it, up until this release is that you could get into handheld gaming for much cheaper than you could with the consoles. a typical gameboy would set you back 80 bucks, while a typical console runs you $150. the games also tended to be a bit cheaper, too. but now that nintendo got wind that sony was entering the portable arena, both companies have gone all out to try and create the ultimate handheld device … but at what cost? both will likely retail in $150 range … costly enough that folks like me are thinking “that’s a little too expensive to just throw into a bag or accidently sit on while it’s in my back pocket”.
perhaps the most interesting aspect is that both are trying to create an all-around entertainment and social device. the main reasons are: 1) if the device serves as your IM device for mailing with friends, you’ll keep it with you more often and hence, more people will see you with it and become jealous enough to buy one of their own and 2) if you have it with you all the time, you’ll be more inclined to buy more games for it.
the second reason above has been a big problem for handhelds. people tend to lose interest in them and stop buying games for them … and console manufacturers actually lose money on the manufacture of the devices. they make their money on license fees for each game sold.
totally, unrelated to PSPs but back to your IPod, i thought this was funny:
