Daily Brushback: What happened to Diane?
Today’s question is for Good Morning America co-host Diane Sawyer.
LP: Ms. Sawyer, two things were clear in your recent interview with Brad Pitt. First, all Mr. Pitt really wanted to discuss was Africa and his efforts to bring relief to the ravaged continent’s desperately poor inhabitants. Second, all you really wanted to talk about was the titillating details of his personal life. Once upon a time, you were a credible young journalist taken so seriously by her peers that some even speculated you might be Deep Throat. Do you ever look in the mirror and wonder what in the hell went wrong? Can you tell us specifically where you think you exited the Walter Cronkite Expressway and turned down Dame Edna Boulevard?

You’re being too harsh. Even though I agree with you on the obvious slip, don’t you think that she might be motivated by her audience’s increasing demand for this type of information? This sells… unfortunately.

I do not believe that appeasing audience interest is the only, or even the highest, of callings. After all, prostitutes are providing a service of interest to a certain customer base, but that doesn’t make me respect them.
If, on the other hand, you’re arguing that if you’re going to be a whore, at least be the best whore in the business, well, I guess I’d have to grant you that……
