Four quick thoughts on Night 1 of the Sweet 16
- Halfway through the Sweet 16 and we’re down to BC carrying the flag for the ACC. Damn. This is not your father’s Oldsmobile.
- “Pittsnogle” is the coolest name in basketball history. I hated to see the ‘Neers go down last night, and am going to be interested to how they deal with a Footer who has that kind of release from three-point range at the next level. He reminds me of another Laimbeer, except that Pittsnogle doesn’t seem to be a complete punk-ass cocksucker.
- I watched the way the first five minutes of the Duke/LSU game was reffed and knew the Blue Devils were in trouble. Officiating has been a problem for the ACC for decades – they call the games in a way that the rest of country’s games aren’t called, and how many times have we seen teams dominate the ACC schedule and then get punked in the Dance by an apparently lesser team that was able to simply out-tough them?
- For those wondering whether JJ Redick can make it in the NBA, last night provided evidence of what he’s up against. The NBA has a lot of guys who are bigger and quicker than he is who will be able to defend like he was defended last night. Now, LSU was able to over-commit on him because Duke only has one other legit scoring threat right now, and he wouldn’t see that kind of platinum-level attention if he were more of a role-player, but still. We saw him out-athleted last night, and that can’t help his draft stock.
Just sayin’…

So sad!
Redick gets points for all of the moving he did last night though. He really was all over the court, continuously running the base line, up to the key, trying to get open for a three. I felt kind of bad that none of his shots fell and his last game stats were so bad.
Williams rocked though. Even though they lost, he had almost half of Dukes points. Yes, some of this can be attributed to the double team on Redick, but still.
Anyway… LSU was good, for such a young team there’s no place to go but up from here. I hadn’t really watched them before. Thomas and Big Baby-all arms – I couldn’t keep track of all the blocked shots. Temple hustled on defense and stuck to Redick like glue-I hope everyone credits him for that.
Although….LSU does need to work on their foul shots, one thing I was not impressed with.

Redick
Disclaimer: I’m a Dukie homer, so here goes….
Redick will succeed in the NBA if he gets with the right team. He can do 15-20 minutes a night coming off the bench for instant offense. He’s better than Kerr or Paxson. He could be a Hornacek.
As for reffing, if refs called the game by the frigging rules, as they seem to do MORE of in the ACC than elsewhere, the punking ACC teams get in the NCAA playoffs would decrease markedly.
One note: I watched most early round games. Much cleaner games in the early rounds than from the Sweet 16 on. There seems to be a concerted effort to let lots of contact go on once the Sweet 16 round is reached. This puts the ACC at a distinct disadvantage since they’re used to having fouls called for lower body contact and kneeing (as should happen). George Mason is just such a contact team.

Re: Redick
Don’t know about that, exactly. Hornacek was bigger and had a lot tougher all-court game. Not the pure shooter JJ is, but Hornacek could drive the lane in a way I don’t think JJ is ever going to want to try.
