The Butterfly Effect: influence out of proportion
In the community’s discussion of my previous post, an interesting subject reared its cute little head. To wit, there are bands out there who are tremendously important, but are mainly important for their influence rather than for their own musical output.
I thought I’d invite nominations. Three that spring immediately to mind are:
My take on these bands as bands in their own right varies. MBV was interesting, but hard to take in huge doses. Sonic Youth is impossible to take in any dosage. J&MC are pretty interesting at times, and I still don’t quite get the rage over Stone Roses. Still, it’s impossible to deny that these bands exerted heavy influences on many that came later.
I’d also note a band like Big Star here. They were pretty darned good, but didn’t have a lengthy career together and their influence has been simply massive.
Can you think of more?

XTC.
John Cale
Terry Reid.

HOODOO GURUS! YES!

Have you heard the live album with Kevin Ayers, Brian Eno, John Cale, Nico and the Soporifics? “July 1, 1974” (or is it June?).
Sweet.

That’s one of my favorite albums in the whole world. There isn’t a day that goes by without me listening to at least one song from that album. Kevin Ayers’ version of “May I” is beautiful. That album has a rendition of “Heartbreak Hotel” that’s better than Elvis.
It’s June 1, 1974.

I haven’t listened to the whole album, but I do like “Baby’s On Fire.”
I’ll have to add that album to my list of albums to buy.

It appears it is out of print on vinyl, but Amazon is selling CDs.
