Hillary “accepts responsibility”

You know, the old “hindsight is 20/20” play doesn’t work so well when all kinds of people got it right beforehand.

Clinton concedes role in OK’ing war
But N.Y. senator says Bush misused authority and misled Congress on how he would act in Iraq
Associated Press
DES MOINES, Iowa — New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton blamed President Bush on Saturday for misusing authority given to him by Congress to act in Iraq but conceded “I take responsibility” for her role in allowing that to happen.

“I have said clearly and consistently for quite some time that I regret the way the president misused the authority,” said Clinton. “He misled Congress and the country on what he was seeking and what he intended to do.” (Story.)

Let’s be clear, Hil. The Constitution grants Congress the exclusive right to declare war. Not the president, but Congress. I have to admit to being absolutely stunned when Congress handed that authority over to Dubya – party loyalty aside, Washington isn’t a town where people are known for giving away power. In any case, there’s a work for the kind of person that voted to entrust warmaking decisions to George Bush: “Republican.” Actually, there’s another word: “fucking moron.” No, that’s two words. Anyhow, you get the point.

Of course he misled you. Of course he misused his authority. I mean, you’ve met the guy, right? He had a very obvious hard-on for Iraq well before the whole UN dog/pony show, and any number of analysts pretty much predicted exactly what was going to happen. Plenty of people screamed rather loudly that “intelligence” was going to be “interpreted” so that it fit predetermined conclusions. Duh. Anybody who was misled wanted to be. Anybody who was fooled wasn’t paying attention to the facts. And now that I think back on it, a lot of folks fit that bill, sadly. Bush may have misled you, but he he didn’t lead you anywhere you weren’t damned eager to go.

A lot of people were smart enough to figure it out. But not you. Somehow you were drawn into the compelling web of insight being woven by The Decider. And that level of intellect qualifies you to be president?! (If you’re a sports fan and you remember the Jim Mora “playoffs” meltdown, envision in your mind me doing that speech and substitutiing the word “president” for “playoffs.”)

The gods help us if this is the best the Dems can do. I can just imagine standing in a voting booth and staring at a ballot with you on one side and whatever travesty the GOP throws up on the other. The very thought makes me long for the good old days when I could choose between Bush and Dukakis or Dubya and Gore or Reagan or Mondale…

  • But, would you hold your nose and vote for her, if she were the nominee?

  • I think it would depend on who she was running against for me. McCain? Powell? And, do you think she’ll actually survive the primaries?

  • It’s way early in the game and I’ve been slowly posting my thoughts on the Democrats, but I haven’t gotten to her and John Edwards will be next, probably around Wednesday.
Throughout my comments, here and there, up and down the boards, I’ve taken the position that she’d do well against various Republicans in a one-on-one contest. Sure, most everyone has strong opinions about her, but she has definite strengths and if you were to frame it as; If the primaries or the election were held tomorrow… And, perhaps just as importantly, we should never forget that through virtue of her marriage certificate, she also has one of history’s great campaigners waiting in the wings.
Personally, I wouldn’t underestimate Hillary because though there may be some who are currently the beneficiaries of great excitement, right now, she’d do the best in a one on one against the bulk of the Republican field and she’s miles ahead of the rest of the Democrats, except in a couple of states.

  • As bad as the Hillary thing bothers me, I do not currently see any hope of a GOP nominee who was better. All of the names out there are worse.
Will somebody PLEASE go talk to Mark Warner?
