A note on “faith”
faith
Pronunciation: /’fAth/
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural faiths /’fAths, sometimes ‘fA[th]z/
Etymology: Middle English feith, from Anglo-French feid, fei, from Latin fides; akin to Latin fidere to trust
1: belief that is not based on proof: He had faith that the hypothesis would be substantiated by fact.
2: Christian Theology. the trust in God and in His promises as made through Christ and the Scriptures by which humans are justified or saved. —Idiom: …there’s no arguing with the power of faith. Says [Rockies GM Dan] O’Dowd: “You look at things that have happened to us this year. You look at some of the moves we made and didn’t make. You look at some of the games we’re winning. Those aren’t just a coincidence. God has definitely had a hand in this.”
In related news, the Rockies today handed O’Dowd and Manager Clint Hurdle, who have never posted a winning record, two-year contract extensions.
Now that’s faith. Just to clarify a bit.
- Last year Colorado finished 76-86 and tied for last in their division.
- In 2005 they were 67-95.
- In 2004 they were 68-94.
- 2003: 74-88.
- 2002: 73-89.
So you can see why they wanted to make sure they locked up these two highly sought-after commodities.
Or perhaps Jesus commanded ownership to extend them. If so, I can’t help thinking about the late great preacher-turned-comedian Sam Kinison routine where he joked about the things God was telling Pat Robertson to do. He tells Gabriel, “Hey, watch this, I’m gonna tell Robertson to go out and check his tire pressure at three in the morning.”
God if you’re taking requests, I’d really love to see Robertson starting at shortstop for the Rockies at some point this season…

I hear Billy Graham ain’t doin too much these days. Maybe he could pitch?
