Bertuzzi off the hook

Well, well – Todd Bertuzzi has cut a deal and will avoid jail time. Meanwhile, it looks more and more like his victim, the Avs’ Steve Moore, will never play again.

I doubt I have anything more to say about the gutless punk than I’ve already said (several entries in last year’s March archive, here). And nothing is happening with the legal case that I think surprises anybody. The good news for people who want to murder somebody is that it’s only a misdemeanor if you can somehow get them on the ice (or, one supposes, the field, court, fronton, track, mat, whatever).

I can only suppose that Moore’s lawyers are in the process of ramping up a civil case, and here’s hoping that proceeding leaves Bertuzzi penniless for life.

If and when the NHL ever resumes, it will interesting to see if their “leadership” has the cojones to truly administer a meaningful lesson to the league’s thugs. Prediction? Not a chance in hell – Todd will skate with time served….

Twnety five years I spent with these guys and there were only a very few who were that dirty.I’m not talking about goonsw who just play boxer. They should be barred for at least a year for this kind of thing, or maybe for life.
Hell, the NHL owners–as lively a bunch of felons as you’ll ever get in one room– only protect their contract investments.
The league stinks, the NHL game stinks, and the culture of the game smells to high heaven.

  • Small consolation. A club in the Swedish elite league had almost signed Todd Bertuzzi to a deal that would have allowed him to play in Sweden when the International Hockey Federation stepped in and blocked the deal. Lockout or not Todd Bertuzzi is not making $$ assaulting people this year

  • I guess in some sports, especially hockey, there’s been so much violence over the years that the fans and the players and the refs all *expect* there to be fights and violence.. so when something like this happens, it’s not prosecuted or dealt with nearly as strictly as it would be in, say, tennis or soccer or lacrosse.. it’s a shame.
