I love U2, but they’re killing me with this one

I love U2. My favorite band, and in my view easily one of the greatest bands that ever lived. Some days I’ll even argue that they have eclipsed The Beatles as the greatest ever. Not only that, I’ve seen them in person three times, and they are hands-down the best live band I’ve ever seen. Even the Popmart show was amazing in its own twisted way.
But $100/hr? Damn. C’mon guys, cut us a break, huh?

U2 eclipsing the Beatles

“Some days…”? Which days are those, the days when you forgot to take your meds? There’s no eclipsing the Fabs, just as there’s no eclipsing Elvis, or Dylan, or Robert Johnson, or Queen…. Those who create or define a genre can’t be eclipsed. And while I admire U2 tremendously for the adventurousness and bravery of their career arc as artists, some of their stuff was simply a “bad idea gone wrong” (“Discotheque,” anyone?). YOU may think it works, as I think “Let it Be” is amazing, but that’s the lover talking, not the reasonable person.
And this money grubbing thing is SO not cool….Pretty much like the $500 a pop Susan paid for McCartney tickets for us back in 2002. It was a fabulous show, but I still thought that he was money grubbing. As Tolstoy asked, “How Much Land Does a Man Need?”

Simmer down, Beavis. Nobody is dogging the Beatles or anybody else. The issue is this – in a lot of ways U2 has been greater than the Beatles, BUT, would any of that greatness have been possible without the influence the Beatles exerted on the band. It’s that Eliotean/standing on the shoulders of giants thing.
And in its own way, POP was a great record. Not in a way that makes you LIKE it – it was ATTEMPTING to alienate in order to make a point about mass culture. I’d think you of all people would appreciate that.
