Pastor cracks back on “Ohio for Jesus” project

[The attribution on this doc is a tad confusing, but I believe it was penned by the Presbyterian minister at the bottom. Thanks to Norman T at the Cleveland Rocks! Desk for the link.]

The [Ohio Restoration Project] is led by so-called Christians who have a plan for Ohio. The project will target 2,000 pastors throughout the state to become “patriot pastors.” These patriot pastors will be briefed on a specific political agenda and asked to submit names of their parishioners in order to increase a database to 300,000 names. These pastors will be asked to place voter guides in their church pews. (Story – anonymous registration required.)

I had all kinds of things to say here, but frankly, the good Reverend Dr. Lentz nails it so much more concisely than I would have, saying in part:

This is not America’s mission. This is frightening, diabolical stuff for non-Christians and Christians alike. It is blasphemous to claim that any earthly kingdom is God’s kingdom. The theological foundations of this movement are vacuous. They are set on the sands of opportunism, self-righteousness and greed.

The only thing I’d add is a question: wouldn’t this kind of campaign expressly void the tax exempt status of all participating churches?

  • We had a pastor here in town who was vociferously against the Clinton Regime. The church ended up losing it’s tax free status. That was a big media event here about 12 years ago.

  • Never heard about that – did it ever get its status back, or is it still paying taxes, I wonder?

  • I’ll check it out and try to get back to you.

Not for much longer, if certain rumours I’ve come across (but, alas, forget where) are true.
