Is it just me?

Natalee Holloway’s mother, Beth Twitty, is on GMA right now. Let me say that yes it’s a tragedy, yes it’s horrible that this girl has disappeared, etc., and I can certainly imagine how nuts I’d be if it were my daughter.

But: anybody besides me getting sick of this damned woman and the fact that every TV outlet in the US is willing to give her time to cry on camera and carry on at length pronouncing as fact things she simply does not, cannot know? Joran Van Der Sloot says he lied to the cops initially because he was scared (hey – an American girl goes awol and they’re looking at me, I’m scared, too), but that he had nothing to do with whatever happened to her. The authorities say there’s pretty much no evidence against Van Der Sloot and his two friends

But when your child dies it makes you omniscient. Twitty apparently knows things the cops don’t know (never mind that her aggrieved mother omniscience hasn’t provided her with any facts the authorities can actually use – you know, stuff like the location of the body or any other incriminating evidence). But a lot of Americans (and plenty of media types) are playing along. I mean, after all, those authorities are Aruban, which isn’t American (Aruba’s not in America, right?), and some of them are even Negroes, I believe. Maybe we should invade Aruba and send these people to Abu Ghraib or Gitmo. We’d get some answers then, by god.

I don’t know if the three boys the Aruban police have been looking at are guilty or not. And neither does Twitty. I feel for her grief, and I understand her desire to focus attention on the case and on the search. I get that – I really do. But grief doesn’t give you any special insight into the facts of a crime. On the contrary.

Hard to blame her, though. She’s not going to shut up until she gets a resolution that suits her. So it’s really on the “press” to turn off the microphones and take the cameras to where there’s real news happening.

Of course, this is bound to happen when there’s just not any other news to report on, I guess.

  • I tell ya, if that was my daughter I would never shut up either….I’d be after any and every lead, no matter how futile….If her Mother shuts up, people might just forget about it….As long as she’s talking, she is making sure no one forgets…..I do believe those boys were involved…One of them has a judge as a father, who was allowed to visit him every day when he was in jail….Everyone seems quite sure he told the boy what to say, because the boy’s story did change….I think they literally got away with murder….If that were my daughter, I wouldn’t rest until I found her….It has to be a parent’s worse nightmare and as I said I admire her for not giving up….How can she? She’d be doing a great disservice to her daughter….I can’t condemn her or judge her because if that was my child, I’d be just like her….The thing about it is I don’t believe the authorities in Aruba are competent, and neither does she….Maybe that’s why she doesn’t give up….Anyway, I’ve rambled on enough…..I feel horrible for that woman…..I can’t even begin to imagine the horror you feel when your child dies, especially in another country….

  • White Female Power
I don’t mean to sound like every angry black comedian, but it is obvious the news media only cares about missing rich, white, goodlooking females. I wonder how many poor black people go missing in the city and we never hear about it. At least Greta Van Susteren has a topic for the next year.

There are plenty of missing unattractive and/or non-white people. You’re absolutely right. The question I WANT to hear somebody ask is this: so, your daughter wanders off in the middle of the night in a strange place with THREE strange boys. Learn that at home, did she?
Mean-spirited, I know. But let’s stop painting Natalee as Mother Teresa, Jr., mmmkay?
