Meet the new Director of Strategic Development

Friends,

It’s my great pleasure to announce that this afternoon I accepted an offer to join The Bloom Agency as its new Director of Strategic Development. We still aren’t 100% sure what that title means, exactly, but the good news is that Art Bloom, the agency’s Principal, actually looked at the “diversity of experience” on my resume and saw something positive in it. Remarkably, they appear to have hired a person instead of a closest approximation to a prefabricated job description, and if you know me, you will immediately understand how important that kind of vision is to me.

I’m ecstatic at the professional opportunity this position represents, but am probably even more excited about the way this firm does business. They’re committed to building around the client’s genuine needs, as opposed to walking through the door intent on selling the client advertising just because advertising is what they do (an approach I learned to value while with Gronstedt Group), and their commitment to ethical business practice is unlike anything you’re ever likely to encounter.

I’m proud of the fact that in the past I’ve had the chance to work with incredibly smart, honest people, and it looks like the next phase of my life is going to be populated by colleagues who are every bit as worthy. I hope I can validate their faith in me.

Finally, I want to say a huge thanks to all my friends and colleagues who have been so supportive as I tried to decide what I wanted to do and who I wanted to do it with. Without a doubt, I have the greatest set of friends in the world.

The adventure begins Monday. Wish us well.

  • I’ve got a 48 hour hold on this piece of work. It is a small drawing by Matisse. What do you think?

It’s under 2K in price and in OK condition.

  • Do those two things really go together?

  • I’m a bad guy to ask. I don’t know anything about the value of art, and probably overvalue things like this. I’m not a Matisse fan, really, but IT’S A FECKIN’ MATISSE!!! So I’d be buying it, but I’d do it for the wrong reasons and I’d pay too much.
That Degas drawing? Yeah, I’d WAY overpay for that.

  • That’s why I’m broke, however, I don’t just buy pictures because of who did them. I buy them because I like them. Anyways, Broke is a relative term.
I’ve noticed that friends of mine who also collect art will put a 4″x4″ picture from whoever in a 20″ frame, thus showing off their masterpiece. We frame things according to their size, thus you have to look for them. The Degas, for instance, is in a small frame and is easily overlooked unless you know what you’re looking for. By the way, you might find a Degas pastel for 2-3K in poor condition………..he did a few thousand of those. Not museum quality, but still a Degas.
Framing is pretty expensive, because you want the best frame, and acid free mat out there. You also want museum quality glass. I went to our local art museum for leads on who is the best framer around. You don’t frame this stuff yourself. Right now, I have about 10 pieces that still haven’t been framed.
My surf movie poster collection, I simply buy poster frames at Wal Mart for them as they’re in my office and not really shown to anyone.

  • While I don’t know much about the value of art, I DO know a bit about the cost of framing, and if you have a Matisse or Renoir or Degas, you don’t slap it in a Wal*Mart frame.
And thank you for not putting small pieces in huge frames. I hate it when people do that.

I’ve dealt with these guys for 25 years, and they’re pretty good. They’ve hooked me on to many, many works. They’re not cheap, but the whole website is worth a read. These guys are Pros. I pointed it to the Rembrandt etching as he was one of the hardest to find provenance. These folks set the standard for determining whether something is fake or not. I’ve seen a lot of fakes out there, some good, some not so good. I will not hang a fake even if I like it.
    Check them out.

  • could you see my last post?

  • No, the one about the Merrill Chase galleries. Those guys are pretty good, and they’re not from NY, therefore saving you $$$.
We actually have a decent gallery here in Sarasota that I find drawings all of the time, and sometimes buy.
I speak of being broke all of the time. Broke is a good thing, that means you have plenty of things around you that mean something. I am thrifty, though. As long as I have a full fridge, my house is paid for, my kid’s tuition is paid, the real best things in life are free.
I just try to earn enough money to pay my bills, buy a few surfboards, some art, and some nice presents for my lovely wife.
By the way, I am getting that Matisse.

  • I’m seeing the entry about writing a book, one about eBay, and the Sox post. Dat’s it.
It’s interesting the way you seem to see things. You’re materialistic in a way, but it’s not some kind of typically suburban mall-chic materialism. The things you want are things with real, legitimate value – value in the real sense, not the commodity sense. I think I’m kinda the same way – or would like to be, at least – although I’ve never thought about it in those terms, exactly.

  • Wow, I never thought of myself as materialistic. That gives me something to ponder. I just like nice things, and part of it is also the thrill of the hunt in acquiring things. Our needs are pretty simple, and we live in a beach shack, surrounded by $2,000,000 houses. We don’t have a furnace, and need no airconditioning. Life is pretty simple. That’s my casa. Our pretentious neighbors look at our house as an eyesore. We live in the original house in the neighborhood, and those Yankees who only live here 4 months a year can just go to hell. Anyways, I’ve said it before, the art I collect is not owned by me, as I’m merely taking care of it for future generations.

  • Like I say, I don’t mean materialist in a bad way. Only that you have a sense of value in physical things that’s different from what I commonly encounter. Materialism is a problem when you’re governed by an obsession with things that don’t have real value, but that doesn’t sound like you at all.

  • That’s a good definition of materialism.

BTW, I think I just accidentally hit the wrong button. If you find yourself unable to comment on my page all of a sudden, e-mail me: sam@lullabypit.com
I believe I backed out before I changed any settings, but if I didn’t let me know.

You may not know what the title means, but it sounds right for you. Say hi to your wife & give your pup a pat for me.

I’m glad you found a new job, I was just asking Crystal if you got a job yet. I believe that my mentioning of you acquiring a job led to you finally getting one. It’s sort of the reverse of a catcher not mentioning a no-hitter to his pitcher. I take full responsibility.
    Good Luck
