SBC to become AT&T

Here’s my favorite part:

“The AT&T brand reflects what customers are looking for in a provider,” SBC CEO Edward Whitacre Jr. said in a statement. “They want the latest technology and services, but they also want reliability, quality and trustworthiness. Only the AT&T brand offers this ideal combination of traits.”

Clearly Mr. Whitacre never dealt with AT&T’s Wireless division (now owned by Cingular). Trust me, that brand embodies other unique combinations of traits, too.

But what do I know.

  • I am very bearish on that combination, and am looking for a point to short that stock.

  • I haven’t paid enough attention to have an informed opinion on the financials, but my intuition says there are better places to bet my money. Well, my hypothetical money….

  • Save your money and hang it on your walls. They can print all of the stock in the world, but there’s just so many good works good works of art floating around.

  • I used to order a significant amount of data circuits from both of these companies, and I must say that AT&T far outperformed any of the other companies I worked with.

  • Cingular buys AT&T wireless. Deja vu. I wonder if anyone remembers what happened to McCaw Cellular after they were purchased by AT&T in the mid ’90s? (I was an AT&T employee at the time) Similar to the USAir/Piedmont tale?
Any establishments in W-S serve a nice smooth draft brown ale? I might be spending Tuesday night there.

  • Well, you might find something to your liking at one of two spots. Either try Foothills Brewing (http://www.foothillsbrewing.com/) or 1st Street Draught House (http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/4334/). 1st St. was recently purchased by Natty Greene’s (http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/9792/), and they now carry their beers in addition to a lot of other stuff (including Red Oak, a wonderful Amber that has been one of my favorite beers since the early ’90s)….

  • Thanks. Red Oak is also one I prefer. Unfortunately, my favorite local Charlotte pizza chain (Wolfman) stopped carrying it and I haven’t found a replacement. I see the ‘coming soon Red Oak Brewery’ sign at one of the exits on 1-85 between GBO and Burlington but it’s been there for years.

  • Red Oak Brewery? Uhhh, that’s weird. Red Oak is made by the company that used to run Spring Garden, but they got out of the pub business. Hmmm. Maybe getting back in. Maybe they sold it. Who knows…..
