How stupid is CBS?

No, seriously. How stupid are they?

Here’s a hint, taken from a story on ABC’s choices to replace Peter Jennings:

ABC is the second of the three main networks to decide its direction following the departure of the long-running anchor troika of Jennings, NBC’s Tom Brokaw and CBS’s Rather. CBS is reportedly actively seeking NBC’s Katie Couric as the replacement for Rather, who left in March.

Lord, lord – the dumbest girl in the whole sorority (who’s cute as a button and damned near as smart) is gonna be sitting in Cronkite’s old chair?

Question #2: how dumb is America? Well, we’ll get a clue by watching the ratings for this trainwreck if it happens. One thing’s for sure, watching Couric will make us dumber than we already are. Last time I watched an entire Katie segment on the morning show I lost five IQ points….

  • Couric as Cronkite?
To paraphrase the grand old man: “And that’s just the way it is….”

  • You mean you don’t like her witty and provacative celebrity interviews?
She also did a huge public service reminding everyone to get colonoscopies before they’re 40! (Nevermind it’s not medically necessary or recommended.)

  • Once again, the dumbing down of America. An intentional dumb choice? Perhaps.

  • If they can’t get Katie, maybe Jessica Simpson could give it a try.

  • does it matter?
I mean, seriously, what’s the difference? The “face” that reads the teleprompter is just that, a “face” so what does it matter who the face is? “Cute as a button and damned near as smart” is just what they are looking for. TV “news” hasn’t been about “news” for quite a while, it is and has been about ratings.

  • CBS should play to its audience
Isn’t CBS programming aimed at older viewers? They should bring in Walter Cronkite and Hugh Downs. They’ve got more reporting in their little pinky than Couric.

  • Why all the rage over Katie Couric??
What is the big appeal? Does she give good — ok, I’m not going to go there, but I don’t get her or why she’s all of a sudden the greatest thing to happen to journalism and CBS just has to have her.

For network news, your primary qualification has to be “simple people like to watch you.” And statistically speaking, half the population is of below average intelligence.
