Interesting thoughts on a Saturday night in the Greatest Country on Earth®

“I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts.”
– Abraham Lincoln

“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”
– FDR

“The nation which indulges towards another a habitual hatred, or an habitual fondness, is in some degree a slave. It is a slave to its animosity or to its affection, either of which is sufficient to lead it astray from its duty and its interest.”
– George Washington

“I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever. . . the Almighty has no attribute that can take side with us in such a contest.”
– Thomas Jefferson

“No Man is justified in doing evil on the grounds of expedience.”
– Theodore Roosevelt”

“The history of liberty is a history of the limitations of governmental power, not the increase of it.”
– Woodrow Wilson.

“When even one American – who has done nothing wrong – is forced by fear to shut his mind and close his mouth, then all of Americans are in peril.”
– Harry S. Truman

“It is to be regretted that the rich and powerful too often bend the acts of government to their selfish purposes.”
– Andrew Jackson

“Every gun that is made, every warship that is launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed”
– Dwight D. Eisenhower

“The truth is that all men having power ought to be mistrusted.”
– James Madison

Of course, you know there’s a kicker, right?

  • I love D-Day’s quote. I love even more that he said that and he was an ex-military hero.

  • Of course I knew that it was going to be a “Bash Bush” fest. However, Lincoln’s corruption makes Bush look rather tame by comparison. Lincoln also had other mental…….issues.
I’m not going to get into one of our tit for tat discussions, because we won’t change each other’s position.

I guess I kinda telegraphed that one, huh?

As I’ve said before, I don’t think we disagree on as much as you think we do. You haven’t heard me regaling Lincoln, for instance, and as I’ve said many times, my despite for Bush comes as much out of my regard for geniune principles of conservatism as it does my progressive side. If the party hadn’t picked up and moved about a million miles to the right back in the 80s, I’d probably still be a Republican.

  • I’m not your typical neo-con. I’m a conservative in the William F. Buckley Jr. vein. I actually know and understand the philosophical roots of my conservatism. That’s why I have no problem helping a liberal Democrat friend of mine run for sheriff in the next county……….much to the chagrin of my fellow Republicans. This will cost me any hope of being at the next convention, but I’ve been a delegate in 2 national conventions (RNC)….Besides, I can’t drink that much anymore.

  • Right. Neo-cons are my issue. As I have argued repreatedly, they’re NOT conservatives. I realize that I look like a funny animal politically to a people when they actually look closely at what I believe. The thing I guess I’m always going to have to deal with is that I tend to be eternally opposed to whoever is in power. I was extremely critical of Clinton on a number of issues, for instance, and during those years the people around me thought I was dangerously conservative (then again, I was in a PhD program in Boulder most of the time….)

  • People in academics tend to be rather liberal. My cohorts at school tend to be to the left of Lenin. We have many spirited discussions between each other.
On the other hand, the kids at my son’s school come from a conservative base, yet the teachers are quite liberal. The kids manage to hang on to their conservatism despite their liberal education.

  • Bush
I’m at a loss as to how anyone can defend Bush at this point in his administration.
Bush is a terrible president and quite probably a worse person – absolutely incurious, closed minded, clubbish, and chicken hawkish.
These are not qualities anyone would want in a leader.
Given the mountain of evidence Bush has now offered of his incompetence in running the country, lack of interest or care for the fate of anyone not capable of helping him maintain power, and downright perverseness toward criticism or anything less than blind admiration, I should think reasonable people everywhere would be troubled enough to wonder if he’s the worst president we’ve ever had.
    Just saying….

  • Most of my colleagues at CU were pretty progressive. Some rationally so, and others were so far out on the limb they couldn’t see the trunk.
I think it was there that I first began to think of myself as a Progressive Conservative, although what some of the more fervent types called me was far less kind….

  • Re: Bush
Ok, is “Just saying….” a Sammyism, or did Sam get it from you? If it’s a Sammyism, you’d better “talk to his agent.”
