Karr fails DNA test: now what?

Attorney: Karr won’t be charged with JonBenet’s murder
POSTED: 5:05 p.m. EDT, August 28, 2006

BOULDER, Colorado (CNN) — Schoolteacher John Mark Karr will not be charged with the murder of 6-year-old beauty pageant competitor JonBenet Ramsey, Karr’s attorney said Monday.

“The warrant on Mr. Karr has been dropped by the district attorney,” public defender Seth Temin said outside the jail. “They are not proceeding with the case.”

He said a hearing scheduled later Monday afternoon has been canceled.

Temin also said he was “deeply disturbed” that authorities in Boulder brought Karr from Thailand with what appears to have been scant evidence.

Colorado authorities have not commented on their decision not to pursue charges against the man named in a warrant alleging murder, kidnapping and sexual assault on a child.

But CNN’s Denver affiliate, KUSA, reported that the DNA sample taken from Karr does not match DNA found on JonBenet’s body. KUSA quoted two sources in a bulletin on its Web site.

KUSA reported that samples of Karr’s saliva and hair were taken in Boulder after his arrival Thursday evening. Those samples were tested over the weekend by the Denver Police Department’s crime lab.

Those tests ruled out Karr’s DNA as the foreign DNA left on JonBenet’s body when she was slain in December 1996, the station reported on its Web site. (Story.)

Ummmkay. See, I’m not all that surprised that Karr’s DNA doesn’t match. Was pretty much expecting it by now.

But I was intrigued by the authorities’ indication that he knew things that hadn’t been released to the public. That makes him somebody who potentially knows who the real culprit is, or who has useful info for the investiagtion, or something, right? Nothing in today’s reports indicating any of this.

Which either means the authorities were misleading us, or that Karr is one helluva guesser, or that we’re not, in fact, done with him.

I hope it’s the latter. I seriously doubt it’s the middle possibility. I’m afraid it’s the former. And I can’t count on any of the news agencies to sort a damned bit of it out reliably.

Stay tuned, I guess…

  • And could not DNA samples have been taken in Thailand? This whole thing reads like a bulletin from Conspiracy Central. My first thought upon seeing this ‘oh, so shocking’ news, was, “What are the political affiliations of the officials who gave the orders in this extradition?”

  • I did some homework. Mary T. Keenan (D) became Boulder County DA this last January. Before that she was…a chief deputy district attorney specializing in sex-crime prosecutions. My guess would be that she’s jumped the gun.
And the Big News about her is that she changed her name to Lacy after her recent marriage. Whatever…

  • I tried really, really hard not to pay too much attention to this case after the initial hoopla died down. (when would that have been, year 3, or 4?) But my original thought was, the mom’s involved. And I still think that; it’s my theory, and I’m stickin’ with it. She was simply too-not-normal-or-motherly in her responses, reactions, and in interviews to be completely innocent.
And Karr is just too visually creepy to not be guilty of something, but it doesn’t surprise me that his DNA didn’t match. Perhaps because of his alleged fascination with the case, he created this opportunity for his 15 minutes of fame. Once he’s out and about, can you imagine the number of sicker-thans who’ll be looking to hitch up to his wagon?
Why didn’t Karr fight extradition? Why does he point-blank stare into the camera like that? Why did the parents of a 13 year old allow him to marry their daughter? What’s the deal with S.B.T.C? Where was he when Michael Jackson needed him? Why is his hair always so annoyingly perfect? These are the important questions that plague my mind.

In a sick way, I was hoping that this would happen so that the media would look like fools with their Karr-watch 24/7.
But rather than let the egg gather on their faces they are going to draw this one out as long as they can to deflect attention away from their own gun-jumping.
    Now we get Karr-post-mortem-what-really-happened-and-how 24/7.

  • Clearly, Nancy Grace needs to be appointed special prosecutor.

  • You mean PERsecutor?

  • You mean PERsecutor?

  • Nah.
The Boulder DA had some tough choices to make. They had this guy who seemed to know too much about the murder and seemed to be saying he did it. They traced him with a snail mail letter (apparently), and found out he was wanted on child porn charges in California. New reports say they made several efforts to get DNA samplings without his knowledge, but never got a satisfactory sample.
So, they had a known sex offender about to teach Thai children who seemed to be indicating that he was the murderer and who seemed to know too much about the murder. In order to get a good DNA sample and in order to protect Thai children, they made an arrest. He was also a flight risk. They certainly had probable cause.
I think too many people see an arrest as indication that the person must certainly be guilty.

  • Re: Nah.
Your reply here indicates that, if nothing else in life, you’re a lot smarter than Mary Lacy. My big disappointment is that I was thinking they really saw his as somebody with info on the real culprit…

  • Why didn’t Karr fight extradition?
That’s an easy one that a lot of people seem to enjoy asking.
Ever seen “Brokedown Palace”? Read anything about Bang Kwan or the Thai prison system in general?
Trust me, if you found yourself imprisoned in Thailand, you’d probably confess to *anything* to get extradited back to the United States. Even if the guy winds up doing hard time at San Quentin in California, it’ll be a Gift From God, relatively speaking.
And Karr was clever enough to know that Boulder, naturally, would buy his confession sight unseen and extradite him before, you know, actually doing any investigating.
Well played on his part, I must say. He may not have completely dodged the bullet, but he traded a .50 calibre to the head for a .22 in the ass, metaphorically speaking.

  • The more I learn bout this guy the less I’m able to credit him with any kind of rational planning capability. The growing sentiment here is that he really thinks he did it.
Having seen a little bit of what he wrote to Tracey, I’m fully convinced he needs killing, and yesterday. This is one sick motherfucker….

  • Well, I’m certainly not going to argue that deserves…whatever, assuming he’s guilty of child molestation, or worse. But I do think he’s sharp enough to know that the Asian prison system, like many other parts of the world, is a black hole from which many are never to heard from again. Doing time in the US, even in the worst prisons, would be a cake walk in comparison.
I suppose my only supporting argument to that belief would be that most sexual offenders, especially those who target children, are very predatory by nature. And any successful predator has to be cunning and shrewd, at the very least. I
Idiots, and the brain damaged, don’t rack up resumes as extensive as his. They tend to get caught fairly early on, from carelessness if nothing else. It’s a pathology that relies on second-guessing and calculated risk.
