Appalling

I’ve now seen the replay of Hunt’s challenge on Cech several times, and if the FA doesn’t slap him with at least a three-game ban it will be a travesty. Six is more like it. He should have been jumping to clear Cech, but if you see the replay off the end line he actually ducks his knee into Cech’s head.

Mourinho is sometimes guilty of hyperbole in his comments, but he’s 100% right here. There have been people who died from little more than that knee.

Also, I’m seeing nothing in the news so far – is Cudicini alive? Jeez, he hit the turf and didn’t even twitch for several minutes.

[sigh] I love it when idiots over here in the US talk about how soccer is a “sissy game.”

Cech undergoes surgery on fractured skull
Petr Cech suffered a depressed fracture of the skull following his clash with Reading’s Stephen Hunt, with Chelsea now facing a goalkeeping crisis for Wednesday’s meeting with Barcelona.
Cech, the 24-year-old Czech Republic goalkeeper, was knocked unconscious in the opening minute at the Madejski Stadium in a clash that left boss Jose Mourinho fearing for his player’s life.
Chelsea have confirmed that Cech underwent surgery after being transferred to the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford to their specialist neuro-surgical unit. It is unknown when he will return to action but he is expected to miss the Barca game.
Reserve goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini could also miss the Champions League clash at Stamford Bridge after he was also knocked unconscious against Reading, although he was discharged from hospital on the same evening as the match. (Story.)

  • When I was in high school, I lockered next to a HS soccer player. One day he came in talking about how a kid on the other team broke his leg the night before. Turns out the guy from my school was responsible. I was appalled. His response when I asked him about it? “It was a perfectly legal slide tackle.”
Soccer ain’t rugby, but it’s not for wimps either.
