Quick note to a stupid radio programmer on an otherwise nice Sunday autumn morning
Here in the Piedmont Triad we have the usual array of bad radio stations. One of them is 98.7 Simon, a format that plays an “eclectic” mix of music from a variety of genres. In some other markets you have similar concepts calling themselves “Jack.”
Since my wife’s car isn’t yet outfitted with satellite (and sadly, doesn’t even have a CD player – we’re working on it, though) this means we spend time flipping desperately through the buttons trying to find something listenable as we tool around town running errands. Sometimes Simon is the best option available to us. Fine.
Their tag is on my nerves, though: “98.7 Simon – We play everything!” Okay, two responses:
1: No, you don’t. You play a variety of mainstream and crossover hits from the past few decades. You don’t play hip-hop. You don’t play country. You don’t play metal and if you dip into the hard rock bin it’s for something that safe as lint. You don’t play goth, industrial, techo, trip-hop, trance, indie, Americana, or any kind of club. Not only don’t you play everything, in truth you don’t play much at all.
2: Even if you did play everything, that wouldn’t be a good thing. Because frankly, not everything needs playing. Many things suck, and should never have been recorded in the first place. Six or seven times an hour you provide us with a good example.
So, two more things. To quote Shrek: “Shut. Up.”

My sister is stuck in the 70’s, and so are a lot of folks that I know. I hate it when the baby boomers say that the best music was from the era of 1966-1975, and there hasn’t been anything good since. I love to remind them that they sound just like their parents.
There is so much good music out there today in all genres. There’s a lot of crap out there too, but as I like to remind the boomers, the Everly Brothers were around in 1967 and they were crap. I myself am a huge Dandy Warhols fan.
Aloha,
Jeff

Even though I own and enjoy a lot of older music, I’m constantly on the prowl for what’s new and great, and you’re right – there’s a lot of new stuff out that’s just fantastic.
It’s one thing to age. It’s another to turn into the thing you used to hate…

I had a friend of mine who’s a classical music snob tell me that she hated rap. Since I used to work with her, and we had to work an overnight shift, I burned a disc of selected rap. I had her as a captive audience, and she had to listen to the music. She ended up loving it, and I ended up giving her the disc. At least she had an open mind.

So it turns out I’m not actually a member of 5th_estate, which I feel silly about as I’ve been reading it ever since it was pimped on infojunkies.
I feel my most recent post in my personal LJ is appropriate to crosspost there, and hopefully you’ll agree.

I very much agree.
