It’s hard work being a superhero

Found this, the DC Comic Book Superhero Test, via sanity_cheque and it looked like a fun way to kill a couple minutes. Most of these quizzes are fairly stupid, but this one turned out to be really hard.

Part of the problem is that the question design is pretty bad – many of these aren’t really either/or choices. Probably would have been better had I been allowed to make multiple selections on most of the items. But even given that, the exercise manages to pose some interesting challenges to our ethical framework.

My results, for what they’re worth:

The Spectre

Your stats:

  • Autonomy: 30%
  • Image: 30%
  • Ideology: 33%
  • Perspective: 40%

Name: The Spectre
Alter Ego: Crispus Allen (Previously Hal Jordan, Jim Corrigan)
Abilities: Divine, almost God-like abilities including knowledge of future events and omnipotence.

Lone Wolf. Introverted. Idealistic. Broad-minded.

The Spirit of Vengeance and Redemption, Spectre is a powerful magical being, at times likened to Azrael, the Angel of Death. Over the years, The Spectre has embodied the souls of the recently departed sometimes to avenge their own deaths, while other times allowing the departed soul to attone for sins and restore balance to the forces of good and evil.

Hmmm. At least I get to be dark and omniscient. That’ll be a lot easier to pull off than some shiny happy goody two-shoes in bad tights superhero act…

  • I am completely unsurprised that you’d be The Spectre.

  • I’m choosing to take this as a compliment.

Damn, I got Superman. How am I supposed to live up to that?

  • Hey, you can fly. And bullets can’t hurt you (although you should still duck when they throw the gun at you).

    Captain Marvel
    Your stats:
    Autonomy: 26%
    Image: 36%
    Ideology: 40%
    Perspective: 30%
    Name: Captain Marvel
    Alter Ego: Billy Batson
Abilities: Incredible strength and speed, invulnerability, control over magic, flight (… the list goes on).
    Lone Wolf. Extroverted. Idealistic. Focused.
The world’s mightiest mortal, Billy Batson is young orphan boy who, when uttering his magical word ‘Shazam’ turns into Captain Marvel. One of the most powerful beings in the DC universe, Marvel’s youth and naivete are both his biggest strength and weakness. His perspective gives him a more polarised view of right and wrong which has led him away from political groups like the Justice League towards a more down-to earth hero of the people.
Well, I think the ‘down to earth’ part is right. Interesting…

    Name: The Atom
Alter Ego: Ryan Choi (previously Al Pratt, Ray Palmer, Adam Cray)
Abilities: Can shrink down to subatomic size; manipulate weight and mass.
    Team Player. Introverted. Practical. Broad-minded.
A master engineer, The Atom has a unique view of the world that incorporates both the micro and macroscopic. He can look at a problem as a whole, and then shrink down to focus on the root cause. He is an excellent problem-solver, whose understanding of mechanics gives him a special respect for the importance of working together.

  • Wow – an engineer superhero. What’s next – a superhero who solves the world’s problems through long hours playing Everquest?
