BCS fails again

Let’s see. One team goes undefeated. And they’re not even allowed to compete for a shot at the championship (they finished fifth, in fact). So once again, the BS BCS has failed to produce a legitimate champion. Do I think Boise could have won it all? No, but I didn’t think they could beat Oklahoma, either. And that’s not even the point – you ought to be allowed to play at least until somebody beats you, right?

And the BCS will continue to fail. An illegitimate process will, by definition, never produce a legit result. Even if it gets it “right” once every five-ten years – which looks like the norm for this system – the corrupt nature of the process will actually serve to tarnish the credibility of the alleged champion.

I have an idea. Since the school administrators are worried about things like missed class time (most of which occurs during holiday break, and which seems not to matter for D1-AA and D2 athletes, and which is kind of a joke anyway when you consider the academics of most top-tier moneyball jocks) and don’t want to make things worse, why don’t we actually extend the current system to its logical conclusion. Instead of simply letting voters decide who gets to play, why not let them go ahead and decide who wins?

Ladies and gentlemen, your 2006-2007 national champions – The Ohio State University Buckeyes.

Boy howdy, after watching the Michigan-USC game, the beatdown LSU laid on Notre Dame (which gets to play in a BCS game if it can find enough players to field a team), and last night’s classic nail-biter, don’t you really have to wonder what would have happened in a playoff? I saw no reason to think that OSU could have finished higher than fourth in a legit system…

  • After you’re elected president, you’ll be able to do something about this, right?

  • I generally don’t buy conspiracy theories, but I’m willing to with the NCAA. I truly believe that in football and in men’s basketball, there are the haves, those allowed to compete for a national championship, and the have-nots, everyone else. Should the have-nots have the nerve to seem to deserve it, the rules will be tweaked to be certain they don’t manage to actually get a chance to compete.

  • In the case of hoops, all those mid-majors do serve a money-making purpose every March. They provide excitement and drama and create the most exciting two days in American sport each year.
Now, when Butler WINS the tournament….

  • I agree with what you’re saying. THe problem lies with the preseason rankings. If you start the year in the Number One spotm you really have to screw up to not get a game in the official BCS games. The rumors before (during for the on air guys)the Michigan-USC among us sports editors, even in the lowliest of dailies, was that the winner of that gme will be the preseason #1.
Can we pencil USC in the title game for next season?
Boisie State is the TRUE national champions. THe AP and the computers might not have seen it, but with what that program and those kids accomplished this year, they are champions of the field as well. THey played with heart all season.

  • If USC isn’t in the title game next year, it won’t be ESPN’s fault. They’ve already crowned them.
