Saturday Video Roundup: chicks that rock

We’re nearing the end of the year, which means it’s time to start thinking about my best of 2007 music review. So today on SVR I thought we’d look at three of the female artists who made 2007 such a great year in music. Up first, one of our candidates for CD of the year, the remarkable Amy Winehouse.

Next, another group that’s working the neo-soul/R&B for all it’s worth, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings.

Finally, we leave you with a happy song about a happy girl. She’s so happy she can’t stop smiling!

See you next week – same bat time, same bat channel.

Thanks, Sam. Sharon Jones is a revelation. Had never heard of the neo-soul movement.

First time I’ve ever heard Amy Winehouse (though I follow her exploits). She’s got so much talent it’s criminal.

Also, the portrait in clinical depression was um, uh, depressing.

The Amy Winehouse CD is insanely good – it’s been hyped to high heaven and is one of those rare cases where the hype is actually justified.

This is the 3rd Dap-Kings CD, and I recommend them all. They not doing anything new, but they’re doing the old stuff really well.

Heard the new KT Tunstall yet? I’ve only heard samples and am hoping that it’s decent.

Personally, I’ve flipped over the young Sri Lankan-Englishwoman M.I.A. Her new CD, Kala, along with the likes of Winehouse’s, should be enough to shut critics up about the direction of pop music today.

Winehouse reminds me a lot of Christina Aguilera circa the “Stripped” era–she comes out looking like a coked-up ho, and then busts out a voice soulful enough to raise Billie Holiday from the dead.

Her style’s not really to my taste, but I respect her ability. She just needs to eat food once in a while.

And maybe lay off the pharmaceuticals, if you believe the rumors. I’m just hoping the girl doesn’t die….

Brian: If you’ve heard samples from KTT you’re one up on me. I also just learned that Marah has a new CD coming but the drop date isn’t until January.
