Well, not a pop song, but always tears me out of the frame:

With this category you just never know, do you? A lot of people are probably looking at mine in disbelief. But songs sometimes arrive in contexts that you couldn’t quite predict…

This song kills me every time I hear it. I only heard the full song a few years ago, though I’d heard the main line of the chorus “He Stopped Loving Her Today” I had no idea it meant he stopped because he died. Seriously, it brings a tear to my eye whenever I hear it.

“I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve seen the show and I still weep every time (and I’m a complete wreck by the end of the show). I have tickets for Cleveland in 2 weeks.

The irony of Susan Boyle’s performance is that she took a song of utter sadness, defeat and loss and made it into a triumphant anthem for herself (but completely out of context, which robs it of its true power).

Hands down. Mad World, Gary Jules version. For full effect sit alone, in a dark quiet room, close your eyes and quickly review your life. Then, with eyes still closed, start the video. (which is cool, watch again eyes open.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4N3N1MlvVc4

Richard Thompson–Waltzing’s for Dreamers. No one does sad like Thompson, especially if there’s a woman involved.

“Immigrant Eyes,” sung by Seamus Kennedy.
