My Brother's Bar: 2376 Fifteenth St., Denver
An unremarkable corner in downtown Denver. No signage announces the nature of the business within. But this is My Brother’s Bar, one of the 5280’s most historic spots, and if you know a bit about the Beats, you know that this is the place from Kerouac’s On the Road. Everything has changed around it, but the place itself? More or less the same.

The other bar like this is the El Chapultepec up on Market Street. Neal Cassidy was known to haunt it as the late owner Jerry Krantz recalled. Even with all of the upscale restaurants and sports bars around Coors Field, this bar still brings jazz nightly and upgraded much of anything. Sadly, Tom Waits’ old hangout, the Terminal Bar, became the Jax Fish House about 20 years ago. I’ve never eaten at Jax bit someone told me it’s pretty decent.
I used to stay in the Algonquin in New York, and have walked 57th St. looking for Matt Scudder’s hotel. I’ve had many conversations with writers who’s work I admired and never found them that fulfilling, but places do seem to make the connection for me.
