In my last post, I asserted that Bono is the John Lennon of the early- to mid-Gen X, and suggested that Kurt Cobain was sort of the late-Xer analogue. Nobody put up much of an argument about that, and it got me to thinking about how ungodly shallow music culture has gotten lately. So I’m wondering – who is the

When Lennon died, I really didn’t get it. I mean, I certainly knew who he was, and at an intellectual level I knew it was a big tragedy. But getting it in your head and getting it in your gut are different things, and I was young enough that The Beatles were more history than lived experience for me. When

No, seriously. How stupid are they? Here’s a hint, taken from a story on ABC’s choices to replace Peter Jennings: ABC is the second of the three main networks to decide its direction following the departure of the long-running anchor troika of Jennings, NBC’s Tom Brokaw and CBS’s Rather. CBS is reportedly actively seeking NBC’s Katie Couric as the replacement

Gary Barnett calls Mack Brown his “best friend in coaching.” Which leads us to the old cliché about “with friends like these, who needs enemies?” CU was badly overmatched, and Texas could have easily – easily – hung 100 on them if they’d felt like it. By the mid-point of the 3rd quarter the Horn offense was pretty much “put

Oh gods – this is freakin’ brutal. And, no doubt, literally true, word for word. Morford has been reading Campaign Trail again, sounds like…. [THX: myths_americana.]

Cody Barstow at Mojo City News is worried – very, very worried – about the Bird Flu, and has developed a series of pieces addressing the likelihood of pandemic, damage and mortality rates, policy failures, policy prescriptions, and then some. I’m not quite sure how terrified to be. I know a couple folks at the CDC who seem concerned, but

First, see mediastar‘s post on “acting white.” This is a comment on that thread that I thought I’d pull to the top here. __________________ What’s interesting is that the “diction” issue you describe, while having obvious implications for speakers of “black” dialects, also applies to a lot of white people. I grew up in a part of NC where the

Where is this house? Man, I need to see this in person. [THX: fikshun.]

acrosticunivers has some thoughts on the AL MVP. Here’s what I have to say about that: As bad as I hate the Yankees, I just couldn’t make myself vote the MVP to somebody who doesn’t play defense. You compared all those stats – but how many assists did Ortiz have? How many runners did he throw out at the plate?

You know how you call customer service, and the automated system always makes you enter your phone number (or account number or whatever). Right. So why is it that 100% of the feckin’ time, when you finally get a human on the line, they immediately ask you for your phone number (or account number or whatever you already entered into

My bud mediastar has cranked up her own blog, which I believe will serve as a support resource for a book project she’s working on (she’s the one who wrote that fantastic USA Today article I forwarded around a few weeks back). She’s been at it less than a week, and already I’m impressed. Bookmark it, and if you’re an
