The future of the GOP
First this from the Washington Post: Some Republicans Predict Upheaval Within the Party — Concerns Include Changing Electorate, Lack of Heir Apparent
I don’t know if we’ll see upheaval, moderate change, or more of the same, but the GOP clearly has some thinking to do about who it wants to be in the coming years. You KNOW my thinking – they need to move toward the center and cultivate a new generation of moderates who are more focused on realities than ideologies. This is important for the party and it’s important for the country, because if they FAIL to do this we’re either going to wind up in the hands of extreme Right elements or there’s going to be a backlash and we’re going to end up dominated by the other extreme. Extremes make for bad government.
Of course, the other thing I’ve been saying for years is how much I’d like to see a new third party comprised of exiled moderate Republicans and centrist Dems. I have problems with all of these folks, but imagine what the American political scene would look like if you had a party driven by folks like McCain, Gore, Bubba, Giuliani, the Governator, and so on. I don’t know how it would play out long term, but it would be awhile before either the GOP or Democrats could win an election.
But what do I know….
