Hillary needs your help: nominate a campaign song

Editor & Publisher reports that the Clinton campaign is soliciting input for its official campaign song. The official choices are:

  • The Dixie Chicks: “Ready to Run”
  • U2: “City of Blinding Lights”
  • U2: “Beautiful Day”
  • Smash Mouth: “I’m a Believer”
  • The Temptations: “Get Ready”
  • Shania Twain: “Rock This Country”

As much as I love U2, Hil’s chances of landing my vote took a serious hit (if you’ll pardon the expression) when I saw that she’s considering feckin’ Smash Mouth. I mean, bitch, please. If you like the song, at least use the original Monkees version instead of the premeditated, prefabricated, preprocessed Cheez Whiz cover.

At any rate, I look at this list and simply don’t think I see a winner. Fine songs, but nothing that really captures the essence of the Clinton candidacy, you know? It’s like they asked for nominations at 8:30 am, before the staff had gotten properly caffeinated, and decided to use the first six that popped out. No, I feel certain there are better ideas, and maybe S&R’s readers can help?

Please, hit that comment button and let me know if you have a nominee that Hillary ought to be considering. (And please, I know that there are people here who love her and hate her, so let’s not let this devolve into flame-baiting. Got something to say? Say it with a song…)

    Oh, what I would pay for her to use Starship’s “We Built This City.” Just cause.

    Gods, no – I saw Starship on that tour (free tickets, a free day at Carowinds, and The Outfield was opening). They opened with that song. And then closed with it. Mickey Thomas must die, along with anyone who makes it their campaign song.

    I’d prefer this Sheb Wooley masterpiece, from 1958:

    “It was a one-eyed, one-horned flyin’ purple people eater …”

    You young’uns can read about it at:

    If Hil goes THAT old-school Barack will have no choice but to counter with “National Brotherhood Week.”

    Ahem.

    I sang purple people eater on the radio when I was five.

    I didn’t just know about it; I knew the words.

    The only song Hillary, Obama, Johnny McCain, Rudy Patooty, or any of the entire crowd should use is Alice Cooper’s “Elected.”

    Of course there are others I’d recommend to them:

    1) The Knockerbockers, “Lies”;
    2) Three Dog Night “Liar”;
    3) Alice in Chains, “The Lying Season”;
    4) Jonny Lang, “Lie to Me.”

    And my personal fave because it’s the longest song title of all time:

    Fred Astaire and Jane Powell, “How Could You Believe Me When I Said I Loved You When You Know I’ve Been a Liar All My Life.”

    I’m surprised you didn’t suggest “Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except for Me and My Monkey.” 🙂

    The only Chicks’ song she should consider is “Not Ready to Make Nice”, but my money’s on Stealers Wheel’s “Stuck in the Middle with You”

    …Clowns to the left of me,
    Jokers to the right, here I am,
    Stuck in the middle with you.
