S&R does Denver

We’ve just been informed that Scholars & Rogues has been credentialed to cover the Democratic National Convention in Denver. Frankly, we have no idea what the hell the DNC was thinking here, because if ever there was a crew you’d want to keep as far away from any kind of responsible proceeding as possible, it’s us.

But hey, they made the decision. So we’re going to try and be on our best behavior. (Our buddy Aaron has the complete list of The Credentialed over at Square State, which was awarded Colorado’s state blog slot a couple weeks ago. Square State is an outstanding site, and along with Colorado Independent gives us a damned fine hometown presence at the convention.)

I’ll be on the ground, as will Brian and JS, and there’s reason to believe we’ll be joined by another scrogue or three before it’s all said and done. We’ll be reporting from inside Pepsi Center (known to us locals as “The Can”) as well as from a variety of bars and brothels throughout Larimer Square and LoDo (that’s localspeak for Lower Downtown). We’ll report on the official doings as best we’re able, and you can probably expect some coverage of the … cultural flavor … of the event, to boot.

If you’re going to be in town for the shindig let me know and I’ll let you buy me a beer. Denver has some of the finest micro in the country (we’re home to the Great American Beer Fest, even) and we’ll be happy to show you around.

Bottoms up.

  • *cheering wildly from afar, proudly wearing his “I like Ike’ button*

  • Hot Damn! Since I was a delegate at Colorado’s state convention, I know how hard delegates there worked to get into the national convention. If I could be one of those other scrogues to join you, I’d be happy to take off of work for a few days and blog my little heart out. [Let the groveling begin]

  • There’s nothing to prevent you from taking the bus down to LoDo and settling in at a WiFi-enabled Starbucks to talk to people as they wander to and fro around the Pepsi Center.

  • Here’s some more info I scrounged up. First, an excerpt from the DNCC press release regarding bloggers:

Organizers also announced that blogs credentialed by the DNCC will have access to a dedicated “Blogger Lounge” inside the Pepsi Center, equipped with televisions, technology resources and workspace to facilitate their reporting. All bloggers will have access to the Convention floor, press briefing areas, caucus meetings, filing centers and other auxiliary events open to members of the media.

In 2004, the DNCC credentialed about 30 blogs to cover the Convention in Boston – the first Convention to credential bloggers. Recently, the DNCC ann! ounced that 55 blogs focused on state and local politics were selected to be members of the DemConvention State Blogger Corps. Altogether, the DNCC will credential more than 120 blogs for the Convention and many more individuals will blog the Convention via credentials issued through the U.S. Congressional Press Galleries.

Next we have the rejection letter for those who did not make the cut:

Hi there. I’m writing regarding your application to the 2008 Democratic National Convention’s General Blogger Pool.

As you may know, we’ve had overwhelming interest in the credentialed blogger program this year. Several hundred great blogs submitted applications. But we have very limited space. Unfortunately, your blog will not be credentialed at 2008 Democratic National Convention.

    Both were found at Kos.

  • I hope there will be some sort of (slightly) organized beer drinking event….at perhaps Falling Rock, so that we may all partake of the the local and regional micro specialties whilst taking in and discussing the DNC? I want to hear all about your experiences, as well as Nick’s, down on the floor.

  • Congrats! 🙂 Wish I could be there. I miss beer…
