Mitt Romney, Man of the People, unleashes his inner hillbilly

At a campaign stop in Mississippi, Mitt Romney declared hisself an “unofficial Southerner.”

After accepting Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant’s endorsement, Romney turned his attention to his bodyguard, Garrett Jackson — a Mississippi native — whom he credits for his transformation into an “unofficial Southerner.”

“He is now turning me into an, I don’t know, an unofficial Southerner,” Romney said. “And I’m learning to say ‘y’all’ and I like grits. Strange things are happening to me.”

Romney aides then tackled the GOP frontrunner, stuffed a sock into his mouth and dragged him off-stage before he could add that “I think I own a few grits plantations.”

So, progress. The Man of the People Tour 2012 rolls on…

  • So, I guess that means he’s either trying to up the ante for whatever back room deals go on with major party tickets, or he’s saying “Newt” doesn’t sound particularly vice-presidential? Not that Rick, Ron, or Sarah sound any better. They’d better just go bury this campaign out behind the aforementioned back room.

  • But will his wife let him cut eyeholes in her silk pillowcases?
