Many of his songs are great, and he was a great arranger and producer–just like Brian Wilson he knew exactly what sound he wanted. I cant imagine that. I and most of the people I know operate on the basis of “I’ll know it when I see/hear it.” It must be remarkable to have the sound in your head from the get go.
However, as we know, talent and goodness do not come from the same gene, and Phillips belongs in the same wing of the Hall of Fame as Phil Spector and Ike Turner.
