Why Rush wants to own an NFL team

UPDATE: We’ve revised this post to replace disputed Rush comments with confirmed-by-video ones. After all, we want to be fair. And balanced.
Rush Limbaugh wants to be an NFL owner. Or does he? Jason Whitlock says it’s a publicity stunt, and he may be right. Glenn Beck has been getting a lot of run lately and Rash needs to maintain his position as the Barking Right’s alpha blowhard. Whitlock also wonders why the NFL’s uber-dominator, Commish Roger Goodell, didn’t immediately neuter this, the Mother of All Bad Ownership Ideas. After all, a high percentage of the league’s players, coaches and fans are black, and Rush has a history of saying bad things about black people. Some samples:

  • Obama is “more African in his roots than he is American” and is “behaving like an African colonial despot”
  • “Barack Obama has picked up another endorsement: Halfrican American actress Halle Berry.” Limbaugh then said: ” ‘As a Halfrican American, I am honored to have
  • Ms. Berry’s support, as well as the support of other Halfrican Americans,’ Obama said.” Limbaugh then conceded that Obama “didn’t say it.”
  • “Obama has disowned his white half … he’s decided he’s got to go all in on the black side”
  • Obama “the greatest living example of a reverse racist”
  • Limbaugh sings “Barack, The Magic Negro”
  • “Here you have a black president trying to destroy a white policeman”
  • “[W]e saw white firefighters under assault by agents of Barack Obama”; “Now white policemen are under assault”
  • Obama would not have acted if he’d known that the Somali pirates were “actually young, black Muslim teenagers”
  • Limbaugh suggests Dems, media believe “you can’t criticize the little black man-child”
  • Obama’s nomination “goes back to the fact that nobody had the guts to stand up and say no to a black guy”
  • “The government’s been taking care of [young blacks] their whole lives”
  • “The days of them not having any power are over, and they are angry”

There was also the time ESPN was dumbass enough to let Limbaugh on their pre-game show. That didn’t work out so well, did it?

Let’s set aside for a second the obvious troubling question about how a team with Rush at the helm would get new players, since presumably it would dodge the draft. And the also-obvious question of whether, given its stance against illegal drug use, the league would be forced to ban Limbaugh from his own facility. Instead, let’s ask a more basic question: why would a guy like Limbaugh want to own an NFL team, knowing all the hassle involved in the process?

I think I have it figured out. Because it’s the closest he can get, in this day and age, to actually being able to buy, sell and trade Negros.

There. I said it.

  • Sadly, I think you’re right. I just figured it was an “absolute” thing.

Q: How do you make a team that has lost 19 games in a row an even bigger loser?
A: Get them a total loser for an owner.

  • Maybe he just wants to emulate Marge Schott.

  • Wow, this could be great. Rush wants to own a football team, The NFL says no. Rush goes after the NFL. Any bets on who wins this one?

  • Because it’s the closest he can get, in this day and age, to actually being able to buy, sell and trade Negros.

    Oh my God, that’s funny.

  • I’d like to see for the author to cite an example of Rush saying something bad about blacks. I would like to see actual sources, not second hand opinion. Maybe some liberal blogs will make some stuff up, because most have never listened to Rush(of Fox news for that matter), and you can call Rush a lot of things, but he’s not a Racist…..and don’t think that Monday Night Football comment was racist, because it has a certain logic.

  • Why, i’ll bet that some of Rush’s best friends are black. His caddy, for example, is the best dope connection he knows…and that’s saying something.

  • “Bone in Nose?” Please cite day and time Rush said that or where he posted it on his website. The “Bone and Nose” thing is not attributable to Rush and is perpetrated by the left. I’m sure 90% of the readership of this blo9g will say that they have listened to limbaugh, and I would question the veracity of 89% of them.

  • After General Colin Powell gave a well-reasoned, detailed, and articulate assessment of the candidates for President and Vice President in 2008, and explained his decision to support Obama and Biden, on the basis of intelligence, knowledge, character, and temperament, Limbaugh called Powell a racist and referred to him at least 5 times as “Genital Powell” instead of “General Powell”. What a sophisticated wit!

“Support Our Troops”, indeed. Chickenhawk Limbaugh, who managed to evade service in Vietnam due a supposed anal cyst, is not worthy to lick the boots of a career combat veteran like General Powell.

This is the same clown who whined and winged and pissed down his leg for months about the ‘Petraeus/Betray Us’ moveon.org ad. He gleefully and hypocritically demeaned and maligned a general and a combat veteran, simply because Powell had the audacity to support a candidate Limbaugh opposed.

I heard this myself, as did several bloggers. Apparently realizing he’d gone too far, Limbaugh quickly scrubbed his transcripts. His transcripts go to a subscriber-only format after a week. He can sanitize any of his more offensive diatribes, and the ditto-head enablers who are dim enough to subscribe will never hold him accountable for any of the despicable filth that he spews.

BTW, the McNab remarks didn’t ‘have a certain logic’. McNab had already proven himself a stellar player. And if maintaining that black players just don’t ”have what it takes” to be quarterbacks, in the face of direct evidence to the contrary, isn’t racist, exactly what is? Only white players are capable of being quarterbacks? Not racist? Do you understand what the word racist means? Perhaps you could look it up in the dictionary.

Rush and his overwhelmingly old, white, male, bigoted and ignorant audience don’t think they’re being racist unless they’re actually lynching a black man or dragging him behind their truck. Anything short of that is ‘all in good fun’.

Mr. Watson, if you have any black friends, which I seriously doubt, have them listen to Rush with you, and ask them to explain to you how offensive he is, and why. You may learn something about being a human being with a conscience and a soul. Double-dog dare you!

  • I’ve listened to Rush. Not regularly because it tends to induce violent episodes but i have, and he’s quite popular here so i’m blessed with a lot of second hand ignorance. He’s so popular that i can’t listen to Tigers’ day games because they would cut into Rush’s time…and for that reason alone let me say, fuck Rush Limbaugh.

And he’s a junkie. Conservative, family-values America gets its opinions from a god-damned junkie. By the way, it shows….

  • You actually need sources? Just freaking google these dude, it takes 3 seconds. I know it’s hard work so I did it for you. Most of these have sources, if you look a little harder you can find the others.

I do listen to his show on occasion in between the dead air on Jim Rome, it gives me something to laugh about. There is no doubt that this guy is either afraid of, or hates black people, and he enjoys spreading his fear.

Here’s another dandy, that I actually heard first hand.

Here’s the link to the audio (on a liberal site)

“As the economy performs worse than expected, the deficit for the 2010 budget year beginning in October will worsen by $87 billion to $1.3 trillion. The deterioration reflects lower tax revenues and higher costs for bank failures, unemployment benefits and food stamps. But in the Oval Office of the White House none of this is a problem. This is the objective. The objective is unemployment. The objective is more food stamp benefits. The objective is more unemployment benefits. The objective is an expanding welfare state. And the objective is to take the nation’s wealth and return to it to the nation’s quote, “rightful owners.” Think reparations. Think forced reparations here if you want to understand what actually is going on.”

  • @Jeff Watson:
I guess Rush admitting so himself isn’t good enough for you?
“# “Take that bone out of your nose and call me back.”

Rush Limbaugh acknowledged making these statements in a 1990 Newsday article (although the latter, at least, occurred not on Limbaugh’s now-familiar talk and political commentary radio program, but at the beginning of his broadcast career back in the early 1970s when he was hosting a Top 40 music show under the name “Jeff Christie” on either WIXZ or KQV in Pittsburgh):”

    From http://www.snopes.com/politics/quotes/limbaugh.asp

  • Here are some facts Jeff, for the McNabb quote you think had some sense to it, made in October 2003:

From 2000-2003 McNabb’s record as a starter was 41-17. the winningest QB during that timeframe.
3 out of 4 years leading up to Rush’s comment he threw for over 3000 yards, except injury shortened 2002
The year after Rush’s comments he had a 104 passer rating for the whole year!
Pro football reference lists players who had a similar statistical career trajectory: Joe Namath, Roger Staubach, Joe Montana, Troy Aikman, and Jim Kelly, all hall of famers

So, what logic did Rush’s comment have, at all? Look at just the numbers and McNabb was and is elite. McNabb’s pure numbers supported the hype, so why would Rush say the hype was due to his blackness?

Oh yeah, McNabb did all this with only having one elite receiver his whole career.

  • That’s a good one, Darrell. I hear that argument in these parts pretty often. Always makes me laugh when i think about it in line at the grocery store near work, where the three people ahead of me in line pay for their junk food with food stamps. And then i see them loading the groceries into a Bush/Cheney/McCain mobile. Rush might want to come out to rural/semi-rural America and see how many of the master race are welfare kings and queens.

  • Using the same standards of accuracy and fairness – and the same concern for possible defamation – as Bonesparkle, I can confidently assert that Bonesparkle murdered in cold blood a 15 year old handicapped girl sometime within the past 10 years.

  • Using the same “originality” as Brian I want to say that Glen Beck raped and murdered a young girl in 1990.

  • @Facts matter, That’s Dr. Watson to you. If Rush were so racist, why are his staff and confidants mostly black. One should take Snopes with a grain of salt(they are not impartial), whereas you look at them as the holy grail and truth of biblical proportions. A better discussion would to be to explore the racism in the Obama camp, and not worry about an entertainer like Rush. A better discussion would be to explore Obama’s selling our country from under us lock, stock, and barrel. We shouldn’t look at Rush, any more than we should consider Michael Moore to be an authority on anything, Y’all waste so much time going back and forth in these pitiful, sophomoric discussions, thinjking you are actually accomplishing something. You really need to be worried about the coming economic cataclysm…..and it is coming..

    • If Rush were so racist, why are his staff and confidants mostly black.

Sorry, but the world is a complex place. The existence of exceptions doesn’t disprove the rule, nor do we get anywhere by pretending that if it ain’t wearing a hood it ain’t a racist.

  • Liberals like to point fingers at conservatives being racist, where it is the liberal policies that have institutionalized racism in this country. You ought to be beating up on Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. Liberals are the racists, but won’t admit it due to their theoretical “Niceness,” which is one of the biggest lies ever perpetrated.

Another thing, why should someone’s politics disallow them from owning something. Limbaugh has every right to own the team if he has the money. Not letting him buy the team could set a bad precedent…..How would you feel if there were communities who wouldn’t allow you to exercise your freedom to buy real property due to your radical beliefs. In your smugness, you might not imagine such a thing happening, but with this socialistic gang in charge, all property rights are in danger(just ask the bond holders at GM). The road to hell is paved with good intentions, and we’re headed there…you just don’t get it but you will soon enough.

    • Jeff: A good number of “liberals” do in fact undertake policies that make things worse for minorities. No doubt. I’m currently reading In Defense of Elitism, and the author does a nice job on this very subject (for the most part – his enthusiasm for the polemic leads him to overreach in places, as well). However, it would be difficult to brand someone a racist if their intent was to help whatever group was in question. Unless, of course, you were dealing with a particular breed of paternalism that combined a certain good-heartedness with a basic belief that said group was too dumb to save itself. I’m sure we’ve both seen that, as well as its results. For the record, I’m not a Sharpton or Jackson fan (I’ve never quite forgotten “Hymietown,” although Al can sometimes be great for entertainment value). So at the level of general principle, I can cede this point.

The problem is that it says nothing about Limbaugh. As bad as Sharpton and Jesse can be (and have been) it’s impossible to take seriously anyone who’d argue that Limbaugh isn’t a race-baiter – in fact, I’m not sure but what he isn’t America’s most prominent race-baiter.

  • Jeff,
You still have not explained how saying McNabb was overrated because he is black makes any sense and is not racist. Especially when the overwhelming evidence says otherwise. What is the “certain logic” to calling out McNabb when the statistics didn’t warrant it?

you silly little fascist, the NFL is a league, not 16 separate entities. They are not excluding conservatives. They are excluding one specific person based on individual reasons. Rush’s politics have nothing to do with his exclusion, as evidenced by overwhelming support owners give to conservatives. If conservatives were excluded from the NFL there wouldn’t be any owners!

Now, Jeff, do I have the constitutional right to own your business if I have the money? Do I have the constitutional right to own your home if I have the money. Hell no and rightfully so. Just because Rush has the money does not mean he has the constitutional right to buy something. He is not being excluded based on race, religion, gender, or even his politics. He is being excluded cause he is an asshole and a racist.

  • As a person of color, I can say that it’s oftentimes difficult for persons for whom these comments aren’t intended to have problems believing that racism is involved. All I can say about this is that, until you become a target and are confronted with it on an almost daily basis, you have no true understanding of the effect(s) that these words and actions have on that person/group. You are standing on the outside looking in, and IMO, you have zero credibility when it comes to deciding whether racism exists or not. I know racism when I see or hear it. Limbaugh is a racist. Could it be a tactic he uses to increase the number of listeners he has? Could it be a tactic to make more money for himself? The answer to these questions could be yes, but it’s racism all the same.

  • Alec,

That “Silly little Fascist” comment just let me know all I need to know about you. And you should study some law before you stick your whole leg in your mouth…..he does indeed have the legal right in the United States to buy something because he has the money. Politics, race, religion, sexual orientation and several other things are not allowed to interfere with the legal, willful transfer of real property Study the logic of your arguments and get your facts straight before you make a bigger fool out of yourself.

  • Dr. Watson,

In typical ditto-head fashion, when your boy Rush is nailed dead to rights, you slither off topic and start blasting away in all directions – liberals, Obama, Sharpton, the coming financial cataclysm, blibbity blah. Distract, distract, distract. Anything rather than respond to the indisputable evidence that Limbaugh’s daily stock in trade is race-baiting hatred.

Back on topic, now. How is calling combat veteran General Powell a racist, and ‘Genital Powell’ not hateful and offensive? How is claiming Donovan McNabb’s stellar record as an athlete, (thanks for the stats, Alec), was mere affirmative action hype not racist?

When your beliefs about someone’s race blind you to the manifest reality of his worth and ability, isn’t that the very essence of racism?

And were you worried about ‘financial cataclysm’ when Bush started two wars and cut taxes? When he took a substantial budget surplus and turned it into a record-breaking deficit? When he went in front of the country and said we had to give $700 trillion dollars to the banks, no strings attached, or face, uhhh, what was it again? Something very similar to a ‘financial cataclysm’, wasn’t it?

As for poor snookums Rushie being able to spend his money freely, he can spend away. Maybe he can field the only all-white football team in America, and we can all see how superior their performance is to those ‘affirmative action’ teams.

  • Facts Matter,

You’ve given me my chuckle of the day. For that I thank you. You should really study your history…there never was a budget surplus,it was just an accounting maneuver. As far as financial cataclysm, you will be able to claim victim-hood then, as I don’t think you will do too well in the future.

I suspect that you would call everyone a racist……good for that old victim mentality. How come your link doesn’t work and takes you to a yahoo page?? Perhaps you aren’t who and what you say you are???? I’ve never heard of a black guy referring to himself as a “Person of Color” since the 60’s. Frankly, you can say what you want about me, but I just laugh. I’m half Jewish and should be offended by Jesse Jackson referring to New York as Hymietown…..but I’m not, as I’m not as tightly wound as y’all.

I thought we buried that racist label when a black guy got elected to the highest office in the land.

as a side note, if Michael Vick can be reinstated, why should Rush be disallowed from owning a team?

Y’all need to really lighten up and realize that you’re just being used as tools by people who don’t give a fuck about you……they just lust for power. Read Nock’s “Our Enemy the State”, if you have the guts. Here’s the download. http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig3/nock1.html
Although you don’t realize it, I’m giving you a gift if you get through Nock.

Enough of this threadfuck, I’m done playing and won’t waste any more time on this.

    Have fun.

    • I thought we buried that racist label when a black guy got elected to the highest office in the land.

*HOOOOOO* *SNZRK* Hee hee hee – hooh – can’t…stop…laughing….

as a side note, if Michael Vick can be reinstated, why should Rush be disallowed from owning a team?

Well, if I buy your assumption, sure. But you’ll recall that I think Vick should still be under the jail. I know you’re not talking to me, but still.

FWIW, I’m fine with Rush buying a team. And since I hate the Rams, I’d be good with that. I’d rather it were the Raiders or Cowboys, but I’ll take whatever I can get. I personally think that Rush in THAT spotlight would be very good for those of us committed to combating racism. Bad for the league, but hey, ain’t no owners begging for change that I can tell….

  • Jeffie,

Still blithering on about every topic under the sun. Every topic, that is, EXCEPT the fact that your radio dreamboat Rushie is demonstrably a racist. Unless you want to pretend he never said what all of America heard him say about Donovan McNabb. Unless he never was forced to resign from his little sportscaster gig for his hateful, ignorant, and patently stupid slur.

Just like Bush and Bush’s appointee Paulson didn’t funnel 700 billion taxpayer dollars into the hands of the wealthiest people in the world. Just like the financial collapse didn’t happen on Bush’s watch. I bet you go around saying Bush and Cheney ‘kept us safe’, when it fact the largest terrorist attack in US history HAPPENED ON THEIR WATCH.

Don’t worry about my future, cupcake. I’m not the one cowering in terror of the Secret Muslim/Marxist/AntiChrist/BROWN PERSON. Unlike you, I engage with the real world, and do it quite successfully.

Still no word on my dare – find a black friend, if you can, and ask them to listen to Limbaugh with you and explain what you are to dim and/or dishonest to figure out.

But you don’t have any black friends, do you? And you’re too frightened and bigoted to try to make any. So I guess you’re really just too much of a coward to rise to the challenge. Pathetic.

  • “I’d rather it were the Raiders or Cowboys”

There’s a better chance of Limbaugh owning this blog and making you regularly dance the meringue naked for him than him ever owning anything in Oakland.
